Information about the Instructors:
Piotr Kulka is a prominent figure in the world of Greater Poland folklore—a choreographer, educator, cultural manager, and regionalist. For many years, he has led the "Wielkopolanie" Folklore Ensemble, operating under the patronage of the Provincial Public Library and the Cultural Animation Center in Poznań. He is an expert for the Polish Section of CIOFF—the International Council of Folklore Associations—and a member of the Polish Ethnological Society. Through his knowledge and commitment, he collaborates with numerous cultural centers to recreate the forgotten traditions, customs, dances, music, and folk costumes of many subregions of Greater Poland. He also conducts educational activities, organizing numerous concerts and workshops for children and young people, and collaborates with universities and cultural institutions in Poland and abroad.
Piotr Kulka is a pillar of the folk culture of Greater Poland, whose work ensures that the region's traditions do not disappear, but are kept alive and passed on to future generations.
Jan Zgoła has been associated with the Wielkopolanie Folkloristic Ensemble since 2008, where he develops his passion for dance and traditional culture. Folklore has always been a part of his life – for him, it is not only a form of artistic expression but also a way to cultivate the traditions of Greater Poland and Poland. At the age of 25, he proudly continues this path, combining this tradition with the energy of the younger generation.
Maria Kulka has been associated with the "Wielkopolanie" Folkloristic Ensemble for 13 years, having previously developed her skills in the "Cepelia Poznań" Children's Folkloristic Ensemble. For many years, she has consistently honed her skills in Polish folklore, combining dance with a true passion for tradition. In addition to folk dance, she also practices social dances, successfully representing Greater Poland at the National Polish Dance Tournaments, consistently achieving top places.
The workshop program involves learning Szamotuły games and dances from the Wielkopolska region.
Wellington Polish Christmas Market
Plans are well underway for the 2025 Wellington Polish Christmas Market. Since the first event in 2017, we’re proud to have more than tripled the number of stalls featuring Polish or Polish themed goods, run by members of our community or by others of Polish descent from 8 to 25 stalls. That’s a number we’d like to keep building, so to encourage new stallholders from our community, we are offering members of our community 2025 stall sites at 2024 rates.
Polish community applicants will also:
• enjoy preference over other new stallholders for stalls in their preferred locations, and
• qualify for 50% off the price of a Newtown Festival stall in the thriving Little Poland zone at New Zealand’s biggest street Festival on Sunday 8 March 2026.
The more the merrier. Sharing a stall is a great way to dip a toe in the stall holding experience and have a lot of fun, so why not invite family and friends to join you this year. This offer expires on Sunday 14 September, so if you are interested, please contact us on wellingtonpolishchristmas@gmail.com or text 027 839 7867 and we’ll get you set up with an application form.
All applications close on Sunday 21 Sunday, so be quick to avoid disappointment. This year we hope to bring live performances, food stalls and outdoor seating to the Arney St zone to get that unique Wellington Polish Christmas Market vibe working around the whole site. A new layout for Rhodes St will also help us to make the most of the space on the street. Looking forward to seeing you all around the Dom Polski on 15 November, particularly with some new Polish faces on the other side of the stall tables
Farewell Mass for St Martin de Porres Church

Do you have memories or photos of St Martin de Porres Church over the years? We are creating a photo display in the church foyer to remind us of the special times we have shared. If you would like to contribute, please contact Ela Polaczuk Rombel on 027 660 5812.

Memorial Walk/Run of Sybir in Christchurch
You and your family are invited to participate in the Memorial Walk/Run of Sybir in Christchurch, which is a part of our local celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the arrival of Polish Pahiatua Children Pahiatua in New Zealand. The Memorial Walk/Run of Sybir is an annual worldwide event organized by the Sybir Memorial Museum in Poland to commemorate the mass deportations of Poles in 1940 from Polish territories occupied by the Red Army in September 1939. Among the victims of the forced deportations were the families of the Polish Children from Pahiatua. By participating in this event, let's honour the memory of these victims of communist oppressions.
We will meet at Groynes Park in Sector 2e, on Sunday, 9 February 2024. The walk/run will begin at 2 p.m. We will walk, or run, along the Otukaikino (the stream flowing from Groynes is the Waimakariri River, along the western border of the Dog Park). Return along the same route, after covering a distance of your choice. Baked sausages will await all participants at the finish line.
Information for those who want to be officially registered in this worldwide event: our branch of SPK has been officially registered in the 2025 Memorial Walk/Run of Sybir as a group of participants, named after the “Polish Children of Pahiatua”. We invite anyone wishing to join our group, by sending the full name, date of birth and email address (these are the requirements of the organizers) to Joanna Rode-Pawlikowski not later than later this week. There is no fee. Her email address is: joanka.rode@gmail.com, phone: 027 2231810. Participants so registered will receive official starting numbers. In addition, our group will receive a commemorative medal of the 2025 Sybir Memorial Run. According to the rules of the 2025 Memorial Walk/Run, each officially registered participant must walk/run a minimum of 5km to be placed on the global list of participants, which will be available on the Internet. Covering 5km, or a greater distance, can also be done in instalments, between February 11 and 28. A summary of last year's Sybir Memorial Run can be found at
