The Polish Association in NZ Inc

The Polish Association in New Zealand is a democratic, non-political and charitable organisation which embraces cultural, benevolent and philanthropic activities. The aims of The Polish Association are:

  1. To promote closer understanding and friendship with Polish and New Zealand peoples.
  2. To provide suitable amenities for recreational, sporting and cultural activities in New Zealand.
  3. To organise and encourage members participating in social support programmes for solitary elderly persons.
  4. To promote a wider interest in the Polish culture (ie. literature and history), to enable greater appreciation of the merits of cultural diversity within New Zealand.
  5. To participate in charitable activities in New Zealand and render assistance to other organisations and individuals, particularly those involved in youth, cultural, religious activities and care of the aged and sick.
  6. To maintain contact with Poland and with other similar organisations in New Zealand and Polish communities in other countries.

History

The Polish Association was established in Wellington in 1948, by Polish immigrants who arrived in New Zealand during or soon after the end of the Second World War. The groups of migrants included the Polish Children, former Polish Soldiers and displaced persons. Being in a new country, the Polish immigrants, many of whom had lost their families and suffered deprivation, felt insecure and needed moral support, company, advice and help to absorb the change and settle in New Zealand. And so the Polish Association was formed on 1 March 1948 to provide a sense of togetherness and help the migrants with the transition to life in New Zealand.

From its early beginnings, the Polish Association has represented the Polish Community in Wellington, providing leadership, direction, and a place for members to meet socially and foster the Polish culture. Through its Members, the Polish Community is a vibrant, social and culturally active community, which has enabled the passing on of the Polish culture to future generations.

Activities

The day-to-day operations of the Polish Association are administered by a duly elected Executive Committee. The Executive Committee also represents and speaks on behalf of the Polish Community in Wellington. The functions of the Executive Committee include:
